After seeing Mad Max back in the 80s when I was a kid, I developed an interest in post apocalyptic fiction, which soon led to an interest in survivalism, anything west of the Rockies, autobiographies by hobo's, farming and wild edibles. I've had numerous gardens growing up, most failed as I had no clue what I was doing. I've read numerous books on survivalism, which may or may have been useful as I've never really got a chance to try out anything yet and most of the books seem directed at people who can afford to buy a crap load of things.
My outdoor experience has been limited to spending an entire day in a state park alone with no clue as to what I was doing or how to make camp.
I work part time as a janitor, live with a heroin addict who is making me crazy. I feel it's about time I finally have my own experiences rather than read about other peoples adventures.
