i just found this today... ive always wanted to build my own plane and fly around america, so i thought this was interesting:

and it only costs 7,000 bucks... which is pretty reasonable for a freaking airplane.

Dunno how well that thing would do in non-satisfactory weather though. But it could be more stable than it looks, just look out for rain, snow or debris ^.^

while it wouldn't be very good for distance..

check out powered parachutes (powerchutes)

you can get them for three, four thousand.. probably less used.

I've been chillin in hawaii for a few years now, and I've built my own shitty little boat, but I think Submarine is the way to go. Either pedal power or electric. It doesn't look too hard, but I don't know how to weld.... yet.
