Hiding The Homeless
November 24, 2015 | 12:58 am
A growing number of American cities are ticketing or arresting homeless people for essentially being homeless. The new laws ban behavior commonly associated with homelessness like reclining in public, sharing food or sitting on a sidewalk.

Supporters argue these measures are necessary to push homeless people into the shelter system and maintain public safety. Critics say the laws violate the rights of homeless people and ignore the more complicated drivers of homelessness like mental illness.

We found homeless people camping in the woods to escape police harassment, a homelessness consultant opposed to feeding homeless people and a city that uses solitary confinement to force homeless people into shelters.

VICE News began its investigation in Boise, ID, where a group of homeless people have filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of these laws. Their case could change the way homeless people are treated across the country.

This is wrong! I have learned about this & seen first hand the making of criminals out of poor homeless people. These anti homeless ordinances violate everything & everyone. If you decide to not contribute to the for profit capitalist society then should you be monetarily punished? Arrested? Sent to jail? Force to move? Relocated? I DONT THINK SO. I have heard of police departments & supposed nonprofit homeless shelters working in conjunction to force once free homeless into shelters for fear of jail. This is wrong. Many ordinances make it illegal to have a bedroll, blankets or sleeping bags, carrying a pack or having cookwear. This must stop!!!!!::rage:: We are becoming a Fascist country. Our constitutional, civil & human rights are eroding wish each new ordinance.

I see the Joe Strummer mural near Thompkins Square park in the Lower East Side of NYC in the VICE video. Mnay of us have slept there & hung out there. Where can poor people go to be free if we are all viewed as criminals?

It makes me furious... bastards the lot of them.
People who would punish and take away the freedom of someone who is trying to simply get by best they can.
It's been said in many ways by many people; "The morality of a society can be judged by the treatment of their poor, weak, and vulnerable."

I cannot imagine the corruption of soul and character in these people that believe they are just in oppressing houseless people.

It's true that laws such as these are reflective of that transition. But it is also true that Lenin said that fascism is capitalism in decay. For all the issues I have with Leninist ideals, this particular sentiment is totally relevant. The storm may be intensifying, but there are more and more homeless every year and they know what's going on..

That man is Insane. Lmao..did y'all catch the part near the end where he was saying that the bracelet hanging from the tree was some sort of homeless symbol? What a fuckin wingnut.

I'm from Grass Valley/Nevada City.. They recently moved the homeless shelter from Downtown to a location across the street from a police department. I was back there earlier this year and they also have put up anti panhandling and no camping/trespassing signs everywhere..

Same in a LOT of cities.. it's really getting out of hand. Sad.

Indeed. The county I live in has "cracked down on homelessness" and given the former juvenile detention center a little makeover; guess what it is now! They closed a bunch of the shelters and then this is the option they offer. ( It's Florida, so I never get surprised.)
Jerks abound everywhere though.

Burn it all down. Burn down the cops, burn down the politicians. They fiddle with the homeless as bullies for now but what're they gonna do when all their pretense wears thin? ...A bonfire of the Vanities.

Just unbelievable. Live in a box or be forced into one that we've made for you. And the homeless consultant super-clown. What a parasite. If the free market is such a great place to make a living, then go out and create something of value to sell to consumers instead of leaching municipal funds for a living. Just wow.
