Places to go in the Northeast?

I have a week to travel at the end of september and am looking for ideas on where to go. I'll be leaving from NJ and have already been all over PA and NY. I also used to live in the DC/VA area, so I don't really want to head south. I was thinking the best route would be either towards Ohio or up to New England (probably my first choice).

Does anyone know of any places to go in those areas? any recommendations of any kind would be appreciated. I will also have my car with me.

Love Vermont as well, heard Portland ME was real cool but have never been myself. Guess it depends what you plan on doing, whether it's cities or more remote locations you're looking for
 
Quoddy Head State Park in Maine. It's the furthest east point in the U.S.

Portland, ME is cool but expensive.

Vermont is pretty awesome as is the Adirondacks region of New York.
